Yorba Linda, CA (May 29, 2018)—The 96th running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, will see Team Cycle News/KTM North America return for a third successive year with the publication’s Road Test Editor, Rennie Scaysbrook, at the controls of the team’s KTM 1290 Super Duke R.
Team Cycle News/KTM North America Coming Back to Pikes Peak
Scaysbrook, a native of Sydney, Australia, is back for his third attempt at the Heavyweight title and will be using the same machine he raced to second place behind Chris Fillmore in the 2017 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
One of only five motorcycle riders in the history of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to go under 10 minutes with his 2017 run of 9:57.712, Scaysbrook is hoping to go one better this year but knows he will have some extreme competition to face, including the return of Ducati’s former lap record holder Carlin Dunne and KTM teammate Chris Fillmore, who will be competing in the Middleweight division on KTM’s new 790 Duke.
“I can’t wait to get back to the mountain this year,” said Scaysbrook. “This year’s preparation has been going well, we have completed two tests so far with more to come on the Team Cycle News/KTM North America 1290 Super Duke R and I feel I’m ready for the challenge of racing the mountain once again.
“This year will be very tough as there are several really fast riders on the grid. I’m sure the times will be close but we’ll be fighting with everything we’ve got to come out on top. This is my third year at the mountain and I want to enjoy my time at this incredible event, relax and have fun— that’s when the speed comes.
“We have the support of some great companies in this project, namely KTM USA, Pirelli, WP Suspension, Dymag Wheels, Super B Batteries, Alpinestars, Superlite Sprockets, Tagger Designs, Track Daz, Rottweiler Performance, Arai Helmets, Motorex USA and Airtech Streamlining—without them this project would not be possible.”
Team Cycle News/KTM North America race machine is a 2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke R, lightly modified using primarily KTM Powerparts—a motorcycle perfect for the rigors of racing the Pikes Peak Mountain.
“I feel totally comfortable on this machine,” says Scaysbrook. “It’s a bike I have a lot of experience with after racing one for the last two years at Pikes Peak. The huge amount of torque on offer from the 1301cc V-twin, as well as the nimble chassis, make it the ideal machine for such a unique race.”
Scaysbrook will be creating lots of content during race week on the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb at www.www.cyclenews.com and the Cycle News YouTube page, giving everyone a first-hand look at what it’s like to race this iconic event.
