After yesterday’s day of rest, Italy’s Giovani Sala won today’s stage 12 of the Dakar Rally, a 275-mile around the oasis of Siwa. Overall leader Richard Sainct lost nearly two minutes to Cyril Despres.

On a course that featured Egypt’s highest dunes, Sainct lost one minute and 59 seconds to Despres, who still trails by 10 minutes and 40 seconds with five days of racing left.

The stage win was Sala’s second of this year’s Dakar.
