Lafferty Wraps Up National Enduro Title

| November 4, 2002

It came down to the wire, but Mike Lafferty wrapped up another AMA National Enduro Championship, following a close win over Randy Hawkins at the series finale in Indiana, yesterday.

KTM’s Lafferty went into the final round with a one-point lead over Husqvarna’s Fred Hoess, and a nine-point lead over Yamaha-mounted Hawkins. All three riders were in the hunt for the day’s overall win late in the enduro when Hoess ran out of gas. And then, while trying to make up time, Hoess missed the second-to-last check and was DQ’ed, tossing him out of the title race.

Meanwhile, Lafferty and Hawkins continued to battle, with Lafferty taking the win by just seconds over Hawkins. The KTM-mounted Lafferty finished out the enduro with 38 points, followed by Hawkins with a 39.

Third on the day went to Yamaha-mounted Robbie Jenks, followed by Kawasaki rider Clay Boreing and KTM-mounted Rodney Judson.
