Former supercross and motocross champion Doug Henry, who is in semi-retirement from racing, will race at this weekend’s Speed Stick National Arenacross Series round in Worcester, Massachusetts, at the Centrum Center.
After a near career-ending injury in 1995, Henry returned to racing and captured his first 250cc motocross championship in 1998. Henry took the podium four times over the course of the 250cc Supercross season and had four additional top-five finishes over the course of the season. He captured his first AMA 250cc National title, with five overall wins and an additional four podium finishes. In 1999 Henry announced his official retirement after racing a limited 1999 season during his “farewell tour” with the factory Yamaha team. He took 10th place at the supercross season finale at Las Vegas. Since retiring in 1999, Henry has competed in select events. This weekend, Henry, who is from Oxford, Connecticut, is a serious contender for the overall win.
Arenacross has become a cast of all-stars recently, adding former supercross great Damon Bradshaw, another new addition for the 2001-2002 season. Bradshaw is coming off a victory in Albany, New York, at last weekend’s Arenacross. Henry, who has never raced in the arenacross series, will join arenacross hot-shoes Jeff Willoh and Bradshaw, along with series points leader Josh Demuth.
Last year, the Worcester round of the National Arenacross Series drew over 18,100 fans to the Centrum Centre. The Worcester show will once again set the National Arenacross Series in full motion, continuing the momentum built from the season opener in Des Moines, Iowa, and last weekend’s stop in Albany, New York.
