SX Down Under

| October 16, 2001

This weekend in Sydney, Australia, will mark the first appearance in Oz of American wonder child Travis Pastrana. Pastrana will line up against Australian Chad Reed in what will be the most-anticipated Supercross in Australia since the famous Sydney Superbowl held back in the 1980s. Back some 20 years ago, American Rex Staten battled with Australian Stephen Gall at the Sydney Showground. It was a race full of crazy passing and huge crowd participation. This year’s event, run by the Spokes promotion, will be held at the Olympic Stadium and is without doubt the highlight of Supercross Down Under. Pastrana, just 18 years old, is expected to win in Oz, but 19-year-old Reed is no rookie when it comes to Supercross.

It was expected that Australian Michael Byrne would also race in Sydney, but the wrist injury incurred at the Motocross des Nations ruled his appearance out.

In the 125cc class, it is expected that 16-year-old Aussie Brett Metcalfe can pull of the win. Metcalfe, who raced the Italian and Australian 125cc Grands Prix recently, will compete full-time in Europe next year.
