Lafferty Takes Title (Again)

| July 17, 2001

This past weekend, Michael Lafferty lost his first enduro of the 2001 AMA FMF National Championship Enduro Series, but if you were on hand at the Boot Hill Enduro in Del Norte, Colorado, last Sunday, you wouldn’t have seen the Team KTM rider moping about. That’s because Lafferty’s fifth-place finish was good enough to wrap up yet another title for the New Jersey resident.

Scoring his first-ever overall win in a National was Washington rider David Lykke (pictured), who bettered California’s Ty Davis on the day. Rounding out the podium – and making it a Yamaha sweep – was local boy Ron Schmelzle. Husqvarna rider Fred Hoess was fourth.

Lafferty’s 196 points represent a total that can’t be equaled by his competition, even if he chooses not to race the remainder of the season. The competitors now get some time off, as the next National Enduro isn’t until September 30, in Michigan.
