Dougie’s still fresh

In case you thought Dougie Lampkin’s leaving his old sponsor would have an adverse affect on his results in the World Championship Trials Circuit, think again. Now riding for the Montesa/HRC squad, the Brit won the first two rounds, held this weekend in Cordova, Spain.

Lampkin dropped 11 points on Saturday’s first loop, then improved with just a three in the afternoon. His total of 14 was seven better than that of teammate Marc Colomer, the Spaniard finishing ahead of Japanese Takahisa Fujinami, on yet another Montesa/HRC.

On Sunday, Lampkin’s score improved, but Colomer’s improvement was even more impressive. Lampkin actually cleaned the first loop, while Colomer dropped four. But the champ apparently lost concentration on his final circuit, dropping five. Colomer made just a single dab on that loop, tying the duo at five points apiece, but Lampkin got the nod for the overall win. Fujinami again finished third.

Bultaco/Sherco’s Graham Jarvis was the best of the non-Montesa/HRC riders on Saturday, finishing fourth ahead of – you guessed it – Montesa rider Marcel Justribo. Sunday saw Gas Gas (Lampkin’s old sponsor) break the top five, with team riders Marc Freixe and Steve Colley finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
