2025 Fantic XEF250 TL Review

Sean Finley | July 17, 2026

Does a $6500 full-sized 250cc four-stroke off-road motorcycle made in Italy (not China) sound appealing to you? The Fantic XEF250 TL is designed in Italy, as well, not just assembled. Even the motor is manufactured in the boot-shaped country by Fantic-owned Motori Minarelli. The XEF250 TL stands alone in terms of price point and specifications.

It has higher-performance suspension, chassis and other components than entry-level off-road bikes like the KLX300R or Honda CRF300L, which have MSRPs of $5799 and $5749, respectively. However, due in part to its lower displacement, it has a claimed horsepower that is lower than those 300cc bikes. Compared to higher-priced options, the Fantic XEF250 TL does not match the specs of the Honda CRF250X, Kawasaki KX250X or Yamaha YZ250FX, which have MSRPs in the $8700 to $9000 range. So, who might want to choose a bike like the XEF250 TL? We will try to answer that question here.

The Fantic XEF250 TL is positioned in an opening in the off-road motorcycle market. With an MSRP of $6499, it falls between $5800 entry-level bikes and $9000 higher-performance bikes.

First of All, What is a Fantic? | 2025 Fantic XEF250 TL Review

If you are a hard-core off-road motorcycle fan, you have probably heard of Fantic motorcycles. The boutique Italian manufacturer was founded in 1968 and has maintained a strategic partnership with Yamaha for several years. Yamaha owned a portion or all of Motori Minarelli, the Italy-based supplier of many Fantic motorcycle engines, for over 30 years before selling it to Fantic in 2021. Fantic was well known in the ’70s for small-displacement motorcycles and mopeds before successfully venturing into trials and off-road models. In recent years, Fantic has sold high-performance off-road and motocross bikes that use Yamaha engines, frames and suspension components but are highly customized by Fantic, including different tuning, fuel injection and bodywork. For example, the Fantic XE300 two-stroke off-roader starts with a YZ250 motor and frame but includes a larger bore, electric start and other upgrades to be more competitive with KTM, Beta and Sherco 300 two-stroke off-road bikes. They even ran an MXGP team with Yamaha YZ450F-based bikes in 2024 and 2025.

What is Unique About the XEF250 TL? | 2025 Fantic XEF250 TL Review

A quick glance at the spec sheet shows that the Fantic XEF250 TL includes many of the nice parts you’d find on pricier off-road bikes: aluminum handlebars with adjustable bar mounts, Domino grips, billet triple clamps, braided steel brake lines, wave brake rotors, an Arrow exhaust, twin radiator cooling fans, a carbon-fiber skid plate, a full-featured dash, handguards and lights. The 36-inch seat height and 21-inch-front and 18-inch-rear wheels put it in line with full-sized dirt bikes. But to maintain a reasonable $6500 MSRP, a few corners had to be cut.

The single-overhead-cam 249.6cc motor produces about 21 horsepower, which is a bit less than the 25 to 26 horsepower of 300cc entry-level off-road bikes on the market. That is also quite a bit less than the 37 to 38 horsepower of higher-performance 250cc off-road bikes noted above. The suspension, chassis and brakes fall somewhere in the middle of those two categories of bikes. It’s also in the middle on the scale, weighing 286 pounds with a full tank of fuel, about 35 pounds less than the lower-priced bikes but about 30 pounds heavier than the higher-priced models. So now it is time to see how it really works on the trail.

The chassis and suspension performance relative to the MSRP is the Fantic’s strong point. The engine runs well but lacks the power that more experienced riders would want, but the overall bang for the buck is good.

Rides as Good as it Looks? | 2025 Fantic XEF250 TL Review

The Fantic XEF250 TL is a nice-looking bike, and it’s just as nice to ride. The seat is reasonably comfortable, with a grippy seat cover. The 36-inch seat height is about an inch lower than on higher-performance bikes, which is better for most people who want an easy-to-ride, non-intimidating trail bike.

Starting with the strengths, the chassis and suspension are much better than those on entry-level trail bikes. The Fantic FRS forks and shock each have preload and rebound adjustability but no compression clickers. As expected, it is not up to the level of higher-performance bikes, but you can push it through rougher terrain without doing anything unusual. It holds a line well, and cornering is predictable.

The brakes use wave rotors and braided steel lines, which are technically superior to the components on some high-end bikes. However, like much of the rest of the bike, the real-world performance is in the middle. The brakes have decent feel but not much power.

All Fantic motorcycles look great, and even this less expensive model shares the brand’s design cues.

The motor runs well, and the Arrow exhaust is very quiet. The fuel injection is well-tuned with no hiccups, and the power is smooth and predictable. As the spec sheet suggests, it is not fast, but it runs well. The cable-actuated clutch is a bit hard to pull, but its feel and durability held up even after being abused on some hillclimbs. The six-speed transmission shifts well and provides plenty of range for slow trails to wide-open roads. The radiator cooling fans kicked on as they should when we rode tight technical trails. If you are looking for a bike to race or climb hills, you will be disappointed by the power output, but if you want to do some casual trail riding, this powerplant will get the job done.

Like many European “enduro” bikes, the XEF250 TL includes many of the parts needed to make it street legal in many countries, but it has not been homologated for street use in the USA and is sold as an off-road-only model. It does have a good headlight, taillight, horn and dash like most higher-end off-road and dual sport motorcycles. The dash includes speed, odometer, multiple trips, average speed, clock, hour meter, max rpm and adjustable maintenance intervals.

The Fantic-produced forks and shock have adjustable preload and rebound damping. The stock settings are adequate for spirited trail riding.

The 1.9-gallon fuel tank is similar to other off-road bikes, both cheaper and more expensive. That will get you about 100 miles of range. The gas cap uses a key, too, because it’s designed to be street legal in other parts of the world. It’s a little unusual for a dirt bike, but easy enough to get used to, since the same key operates both.

Not many “entry-level” dirt bikes come with a carbon-fiber skid plate. Nice touch.

Parts Availability and Customer Support | 2025 Fantic XEF250 TL Review

Texas-based Central Powersports Distribution (CPD) imports the Fantic bikes along with some other well-known motorcycle and aftermarket parts brands and services the small dealer network. So, you are unlikely to have several Fantic dealers in your area to buy a bike or parts from, but if you do have one, it is likely to be a small, hands-on shop. CPD also sells replacement and aftermarket parts through its website, which is also linked from www.fanticmotorusa.com.

The Verdict | 2025 Fantic XEF250 TL Review

If your riding skills and/or bank account are not ready for a $9000-plus off-road bike and the entry-level bikes on the market don’t provide the performance you are looking for, the Fantic XEF250 TL might be a good option for you. We did not get to ride it enough to really test its durability, but it seems well-built, and the parts used are well above those of entry-level bikes. The performance is also above that of most entry-level bikes, even if the horsepower of the motor leaves a little to be desired for more serious riders. The XEF250 TL is stuck in the middle, and that might be the sweet spot for you.CN
