King of Supercross Took Win Aboard Mazda/Chaparral Yamaha

In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to January of 1999 and that year’s third round of the AMA Supercross Series held at Bank One Park in Phoenix. This image shows the start of the main event with Mazda/Chaparral Yamaha’s Jeremy McGrath (1) earning the holeshot, just edging out factory Yamaha’s John Dowd (6). Also coming in hot are Honda riders Kevin Windham (14) and Mickael Pichon (5) followed by Suzuki’s Larry Ward (7). Also shown in the photo are David Vuillemin (934), Robbie Reynard (17), Mike LaRocco (3), Jeff Emig (11) and Sebastien Tortelli (44).
McGrath went on to win the main that night over Pichon and LaRocco. MC also took over the lead in the point standings from Ezra Lusk, who’d won the first two rounds of the series. McGrath went on to win the ’99 SX series championship, the sixth of his career.
