Debbie Burnworth hosted the 12th annual Carlsbad Reunion on Saturday, June 21. Despite the passing of her husband, Scott, in December, Debbie—along with daughter Breanna and Scott’s brother, Jeff—was determined to continue the tradition. The couple had established this event as a beloved tradition in Southern California. This year’s reunion was dedicated to “The Burner,” Scott Burnworth.

Several Carlsbad racers from the past, including track owner Larry Grismer, attended this year’s event. Also present was Stu Peters of the Continental Motosports Club (CMC), who convinced Grismer to host CMC motocross races at the facility. This later became the venue for the Carlsbad 500cc U.S. Motocross Grand Prix, which was televised nationally on ABC’s Wide World of Sports and played a significant role in putting motocross on the map in the U.S. Both Grismer and Peters reminisced about the good old days.

Some of the riders in attendance included three-time CMC number-one Marty Tripes, Jim Beauchamp, Gary Denton, Tommy Croft, Joe Root, Gary Chaplin and Mike Chamberlain. Additionally, Grismer invited Vicki Haag, who was the woman behind convincing ABC Wide World of Sports to hold a Women’s Motocross event the day before the 500cc World Championship.
Debbie and the Burnworth family plan to host another reunion next year.CN
