In this week’s Throwback we dial in the Wayback Machine to October of 1991 and the AMA/CCS Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. This photo shows Edwards leading the CCS Amateur Heavyweight Superbike race over Damian Weber (No. 354). Colin Edwards was the breakout star of the event that year, winning a record five CCS Amateur National titles. It was the weekend that Edwards burst onto the scene for most road racing fans.  That fall was a whirlwind for the then 17-year-old, who went from a dust devil to a full-blown Texas Tornado. In the span of a couple of weeks Edwards dominated in the Race of Champions, did the same at the WERA Grand National Finals and then turned pro and finished second to Jimmy Filice in the AMA 250 Grand Prix on the streets of Miami. Suddenly the former amateur motocross racer was the hottest property in American road racing.
