BMW owners could opt for the same racing technology used by Reg Pridmore for their street bike
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to 1978. If you were a BMW enthusiast and wanted the ultimate handling package, for about $2500 you could buy a complete RPM “Reg Pridmore Monoshock” kit giving you everything the American BMW road racing team had learned in AMA F750 and Superbike and apply it to your street machine. The RPM/BMW kit included a Rob North-designed and built Chromoly frame featuring Reynolds 4130 tubing, a triangulate swingarm, a Pridmore-tuned monoshock, Morris alloy wheels, Lockhead brake caliper, plasma coated brake rotors, steel-braided brake lines, an RPM triple clamp, a choice of handlebars, including clip-ons, an oil-cooling system, a lighter and higher amp battery and an alloy fuel tank with a six-gallon capacity and you’d used the standard BMW front forks, considered among the best in class at the time. No word on how many of these kits sold, but a 1978 RPM/BMW would be an ultra-cool find today.
