The track featured some new sections, and Cole Martinez, back from injury, took the Pro 450-class win while Jack Simpson grabbed the Pro 250-class victory.
Temperatures were in the mid-90s by the time the Pro classes got started. Precision Concepts Tyler Lynn took the holeshot, while SLR Honda’s Cole Martinez, Purvines Racing’s Justin Hoeft, and KTM’s Mateo Oliviera followed while battling for position.
Martinez eventually settled into second before a big get-off in the sand dropped him to third behind leader Lynn and second place Hoeft. Unfazed by the crash, Martinez got back around Hoeft and eventually Lynn, who later admitted that while his pace was up to speed, his stamina was not and backed it down a notch because of the heat. Both Martinez and points leader Hoeft got around him before the finish line.
Simpson came into Mesquite with a 27-point lead over RPM FMF KTM’s Jake Alvarez, and the two riders started 1-2 in the race, with 3 Bros. Husqvarna Kai Aiello in the fight as well.
Simpson and Alvarez put on quite the show as they fought for the win. Unfortunately for Alvarez, a big crash eventually put him out of the race and Simpson rode away for his third win of the year. It was also enough for him to clinch the class championship, with Alvarez carding a DNF.
Meanwhile, 3 Bros. Racing Colton Aeck moved up through the pack and got into second place, finishing on the podium for the third race in a row. After taking an almost three-year hiatus, Wyatt Mattson returned and got on the box in third place.
SLR Honda rider Jace Allred topped the ProAm field. He and another new rider to the WORCS Championship, Jack Glathar, went 1-2. Mason Decunzo pushed hard to keep up with the two riders ahead of him but wilted a little in the heat. Still, Decunzo rode well and was rewarded with a spot on the podium.
Tristun Alvarez (RPM KTM) won the Pro 125 class despite a first-lap get-together with another rider. Alvarez caught leader Travis Damon, and they battled for a while before Alvarez got by him and ran off with the win.
Kaitlyn Jacobs (FMF RPM) clinched her first Women’s Pro title.
