Larry Pegram Broke Through to Win His First National
In the week’s Throwback we dial back the clock 32 years to July of 1991 and travel to Hagerstown, Maryland, and that year’s Hagerstown Half-Mile AMA Grand National. This photo shows the start of the 20-lap national with Steve Morehead (No. 42) starting from the inside of the first row. Other front-row starters included Rodney Farris (No. 92), Scott Parker (No. 1), Dan Ingram (No. 31), Kevin Atherton (No. 23) and Chris Carr (No. 20). But it was 18-year-old Larry Pegram (starting from the outside of row two) who worked his way up on his Eaken-Sponseller Racing Honda RS750 to win his first AMA Grand National. Pegram passed Ronnie Jones with five laps to go and pulled away to score a commanding victory. “The easier I rode, the faster I went,” Pegram said on the podium.
