Round eight of the 2023 British Superbike Championship was held across the long August weekend in the UK at Cadwell Park and it was Glenn Irwin (BeerMonster Ducati) who took the lion’s share of the glory with two wins out of three, reducing Tommy Bridewell’s advantage in the standings to 14.5 points.
Irwin took the race-one win by 0.118 seconds over Kyle Ryde (LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha) and Ryan Vickers (LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha), and did it again over Ryde in race two with a last-lap pass at the Coppice section of the track before pulling away to a 0.4-second win. Jason O’Halloran (McAMS Yamaha) was third.
“I felt the lap time came quite easily but I tried to win the race at the slowest possible pace,” Irwin said. “I slowed the pace up with the stop-go tactics as I knew a maneuver could come anywhere here.
“All that matters is getting those points back on Tommy in the standings and I am so grateful for this win.”
Bridewell rebounded in the third race of the weekend, making a move on his BeerMonster Ducati teammate Irwin to win by 0.057 seconds. ROKiT BMW Motorrad Team’s Leon Haslam took third, half a second behind.
As the championship fight now reaches the Showdown with the points value increasing, 16 riders remain mathematically in title contention. CN
