Round eight of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is underway at the always-iconic Washougal National. This is the first round of the year where Eli Tomac has the red plate as he leads Chase Sexton in the overall points standings. The day ended with four epic motos, but it was Chase Sexton and Jett Lawrence claiming overall wins.

Ryan Dungey got things going this afternoon with a holeshot in the first 450 moto. Dungey quickly dropped to second behind Chase Sexton but was solidly in contention for the first five minutes of the race. Shortly after his bike gave out and was forced to retire from the moto.
With Dungey out, the stage was set for another Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac battle. Sexton led for the first half of the race before Tomac made a key pass just before the finish line. Then it was Tomac’s turn up front and he stretched the gap out for the second half of the race.
Then with time ticking down, Tomac washed the front end and went down. Sexton had nowhere to go and fell on top of Tomac and neither rider could get their bike started. The two remounted at the same time and the running order remained the same. Tomac held the lead through to the finish and set his fastest lap of the race on the final lap. Sexton also logged his fastest lap on the last lap and finished second, only 1.1 seconds back.
Jason Anderson fell on lap one but worked his way to third place by the end of the race. He battled with Ken Roczen for the final podium but was a full 44 seconds back from the front two finishers.

The second 450 moto started with all the heavy hitters up front again and ready to duke it out. Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac quickly established themselves as the ones to beat and went at it for nearly the entire 35 minute race.
These two played a constant game of tug-of-war, going back and forth every lap, but Sexton consistently held off the number three. In the end, Sexton finally edged Tomac, taking the second moto win and the overall victory. This ends Eli Tomac’s eight moto win streak, as he finished second and maintains the points lead by five.
Jason Anderson backed up his first moto finish with another third place, going 3-3 for third overall.

Washougal Pro Motocross round 8 250 Moto 1
Jo Shimoda crossed the holeshot line first over Hunter and Jett Lawrence. Jo led the first lap and continued up front for the first 10 minutes before Hunter made a pass for the top spot. Shimoda returned the favor and actually sent Hunter off the track but the two held their same positions.
With Hunter Lawrence taking the lead, he quickly put two seconds on those behind him. Jo and Jett battled it out for the second place position and closed the gap to Hunter, making it a three rider fight for the lead.
With five minutes left, all three riders were in the same section and Jett managed to make a pass on Shimoda for second. By then it was too little too late and Hunter was able to control the lead to the finish. The Lawrence’s claimed first and second with Shimoda third.

What a ride from Justin Cooper who absolutely dominated the second 250 moto. The Yamaha rider started up front continually opened the gap as the race wore on. He never looked back despite action going on behind him and earned his first moto win of the season. Cooper’s 4-1 scores earned him second overall, his best finish of the year.
Jett Lawrence started back in fourth but worked hard to eventually earn second place. After bumping up a spot from Hunter’s fall, Jett passed Jo Shimoda to secure second. He wasn’t able to make a run at Cooper and settled in for what would actually give hm the overall win. Lawrence’s consistent 2-2 finishes were good enough for his seventh overall in eight attempts.
Jo Shimoda ran up front all race and finished third in moto two. He battled the Lawrence brothers all day and found himself in a late-race battle with Hunter for the final podium position. Shimoda held onto the spot but unfortunately his 3-3’s were only good enough for fourth overall.
Hunter Lawrence was so close to an overall victory today. The moto one winner got off to a great start but slid out while in second place which let Jo and Jett get through. Hunter put on a massive charge late in the race and closed all the way back up to Shimoda. A pass on Shimoda would’ve earned him the overall win but Shimoda held him off at the line. Hunter’s 1-4 finishes still gave him third overall.
