Cooper Webb finished the 2021 450SX season with a bang, taking home the win and the championship in the same night. Both 250SX divisions were also decided at the final round, with Colt Nichols and Justin Cooper bringing home the hardware for the Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha team.
450SX Main Event
Ken Roczen (Honda HRC) was in a must-win situation to keep his title hopes alive and came out swinging into turn one. He grabbed the holeshot and the early lead with Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) right behind. Webb (Red Bull KTM) quickly moved into the second position and closed right to the back of Roczen.
Webb and Roczen held each other up as they battled for the lead and allowed a hungry group of competitors to close up. Chase Sexton (Honda HRC) moved into third position behind the Roczen / Webb battle. It was a Honda, KTM, Honda, KTM running in the top four.
Marvin Musquin pushed his way up to the back of Sexton and the two battled for a number of laps. Eventually, Sexton gained the advantage and set his sights on catching the lead duo. Sexton made his way around Webb in the whoop section and locked in the second position.
Battles were ensuing all over the track, as groups of riders duked it out for position. On lap 8 of the 29 lap final, Sexton made the pass on his Honda HRC teammate. He quickly extended his lead to over two seconds.
Webb made his way back up to the rear end of Roczen and gave him a solid nudge as he passed into second place. This bobble allowed Musquin to also pass Roczen just one corner later.
The Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha riders of Plessinger, Ferrandis, and Stewart all ran consistent races, holding down the fourth, fifth, and sixth place positions. Once Ferrandis made his way past Roczen, the others quickly moved through too. Ferrandis, the 450SX Rookie of the Year went on to finish fourth.
Sexton still remained up front, but a slip-up with the rear wheel allowed Webb to make his move into the lead. This mistake was the competition’s nail in the coffin, as Webb ran away with the rest of the race.
In the final laps, Musquin charged back and passed Sexton for second place.
Webb crossed the finish line first, taking home the 2021 450SX championship. He stamped the season with a win, despite only needing a 19th place finish to seal the deal.
Musquin and Sexton rounded out the podium.
Malcom Stewart had a solid run in Salt Lake, finishing the season with a fifth-place result.
Joey Savatgy had a great ride to finish sixth on the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM. Justin Barcia finished seventh on the Red Bull Troy Lee Designs KTM and Plessinger finished eighth.
Further back in the field Tomac and Roczen battled for positions inside the top ten. They finished ninth and tenth respectively. Tonight’s finishes did not affect their overall rankings as Roczen placed second and Tomac third 2021 championship points.
250SX East – West Shootout
With undecided titles on the line, the 250SX main event started off as a nail-biter. Many riders went down off the start, but Colt Nichols (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) came out unscathed with the holeshot. Seth Hammaker (Pro Circuit Kawasaki) held down the second spot with the Lawrence brothers (Honda HRC) in third (Jett) and fourth (Hunter). Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) played it safe and rode conservatively through the first few laps.
The running order remained stagnant for the first three minutes of the race as Nichols extended his lead.
Jett Lawrence made his way past Hammaker at the five-minute mark and began chipping off time on Nichols. His brother Hunter tried to make a similar pass just a few laps later but tucked the front end and went down in the process. Luckily this debacle cost him only one position.
Cameron McAdoo (Pro Circuit Kawasaki) looked fast tonight and made his way around Hunter Lawrence at the five-minute mark before passing teammate Hammaker too.
Back up front, Jett Lawrence used his whoop speed to cut Nichols’ lead down and then passed him for the lead on lap sixteen.
Hunter Lawrence pushed back up to the back of McAddo. With two to go, Hunter Lawrence tagged the rear wheel of McAdoo and was forced to wait until the final lap to secure the pass for the final step on the podium.
At the line, Jett Lawrence took the win, followed by Nichols and Hunter Lawrence. With his second-place finish, Nichols secured the 250SX West Coast Title.
Justin Cooper cruised it home in ninth and grabbed the 250SX East Coast Title in the process.
The Pro Circuit Kawasaki trio of McAdoo, Hammaker, and Shimoda finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively. Pierce Brown raced his GasGas to seventh ahead of Jalek Soll on the Rockstar Husqvarna. Kyle Peters rounded out the top ten on the Phoenix Racing Honda.
