Throwback Thursday: Mark Barnett’s Rose Bowl Holeshot
In this week’s Throwback we turn back the calendar 36 years to 1984 and that year’s Rose Bowl AMA Supercross. This photo shows the start of the second qualifying race with Team Suzuki’s Mark Barnett (No. 2) nailing the holeshot with the front wheel of his Suzuki RM250 in the air. Also shown coming out of the gate are John Whelchel (No. 64), Kent Howerton (No. 14), Rick Johnson (No. 17), Jim Holley (No. 28) and an unknown rider on bike No. 450. Barnett went on to win the qualifier ahead of Johnson and Howerton. Jeff Ward won the main event that night in front of one of the biggest crowds ever to attend a Supercross race, with an estimated 70,000 fans coming to Pasadena to watch the event.
