Throwback Thursday: Camlin’s Spectacular Springfield
In this week’s Throwback we fire up the wayback machine and dial it back 22 years to 1996 and that year’s Springfield Mile doubleheader. In a somewhat surprising result, Davey Camlin, of Rock Island, Illinois, broke through not only to win Saturday’s Mile, but turned around and scored the victory in Sunday’s Mile as well on the Skip Eaken-tuned Corbin Racing Harley-Davidson XR750. Both races came down to a last-lap drafting battle. In this epic shot taken by veteran flat track photographer Dave Hoenig, it shows Camlin leading the freight-train pack of riders that typified the Springfield Miles of that era. The doubleheader sweep that Labor Day weekend doubled Camlin’s career AMA Grand National win tally to four. Tragically Camlin passed away three years later in a crash at the Du Quoin Mile.
