The FXDR gets the firm’s badass 114 cubic inch motor, which we tested here when we had an H-D Fat Bob last year. Harley claims the 114 will churn out a huge 119 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm, although the FXDR gets an updated, forward facing intake to look like the factory Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines drag racers and a new two-into-one exhaust that helps aid cornering clearance.
The motor can be enhanced via the company’s accessory range with parts like a new titanium muffler that weighs 50 percent less than stock, and the Stage 1 tuning kit with a Screamin’ Eagle Air Cleaner Kit and the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner. Once you’ve got the Stage 1 kit on your bike, you can look at going Stage 2, 3 or even 4—which doesn’t void your warranty when the work is done by a Harley-Davidson dealer.
The FXDR’s development was aimed at saving weight wherever possible. The company fitted an aluminum swingarm, saving 43 percent over the steel item found on bikes like the Fat Bob. The wheels are lighter, and there’s an alloy subframe and composite tail section and front and rear fenders, replacing the steel units traditionally used.
The basic chassis is unchanged from the Softail base, with 43mm Showa forks and twin 300mm front brake discs gripped by four-piston calipers, although the styling is sharper than something on the Fat Bob 114 and aimed at the drag bike crowd, with LED lighting front and rear.
“The look of the FXDR 114 expresses its performance potential and highlights the technical features that set it apart from the rest of the Softail line-up,” said Brad Richards, Vice President of Styling and Design. “The drag-bike influence is strong with the raked and inverted front end, massive intake and exhaust, proportional contrast between the wheels, and the clipped tail section. But we made sure that purely technical elements like the aluminum swingarm, fully integrated digital instrumentation within the rider controls, and exposed external suspension adjuster are highlighted as well and help define this bike’s mission, which is pure performance, not just straight-line performance.”
The new FXDR 114 comes in Vivid Black for $21,349, with an assortment of custom colors starting at $21,749. We’ll be testing one for you when a press unit becomes available.
