Throwback Thursday: Laguna Seca AMA Lightweight National (1981)

In this week’s Throwback Thursday with go back 35 years ago and visit Monterey, California’s scenic Laguna Seca Raceway. This photo shows the start of the AMA Lightweight National that July weekend. On the right is factory Kawasaki rider Eddie Lawson (No. 21) aboard the belt-driven Kawasaki KR250. Lawson went on to win the race that day over fellow front-row starters Jimmy Filice, on the No. 165 Roberts-Lawwill/Wrangler/PJ1 -sponsored Yamaha TZ250, and David Emde aboard his No. 56 Bob Endicott-sponsored Yamaha. Also visible in the photo are Craig Morris (No. 92), unidentified riders No. 38 and 31, Keith Kiyota (No. 53), Rusty Sharp (No. 99) who finished fourth, unidentified No. 41 and Bruce Maus (No. 158). Lawson went on to win the championship that season over Filice and Steve Baron.
