In this week’s Throwback Thursday Cal Rayborn races his Harley-Davidson Sprint over the jump in front of rider 39X and Gary Nixon (1) during a heat race for the 1969 Santa Fe TT National in Hinsdale, Illinois. Rayborn, who was better known for his pavement skills, was battling Nixon for the series lead at that point in the season and a fifth-place at Santa Fe Speedway on this night gave Rayborn the series lead. But it was early in the season and it was Mert Lawwill eventually breaking through to win the 1969 AMA Grand National Championship. Rayborn finished the year ranked third behind Lawwill and Gene Romero. (Photo from the Cycle News Collection)
