Chaz Davies Earns First Career World Superbike Pole

Chaz Davies stays on top at Laguna Seca and earns his first career World Superbike pole.

MONTEREY, CA, JULY 18—Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Chaz Davies scored his first career Superpole win with a 1:22.101-second lap in Superpole 2 at Mazda RaceLaguna Seca.

A Ducati block-out of the top two places saw Davies teammate Davide Giugliano second, after a late altercation on track with Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Alex Lowes as the two riders almost tangled into the scary turn one and two combination. Lowes was qualified eighth.

Laguna first timer Jordi Torres on the Aprilia Racing Team Red Devils machine rode to third place on the grid, holding off the relatively sedate Tom Sykes on the factory Kawasaki to fourth, with his teammate Jonathan Rea fifth. The second row was completed by Torres’ teammate and Leon Haslam.

Privateer Niccolo Canepa on the Althea Racing Ducati continued his good form to go seventh, one place up on Lowes.

Pata Honda’s Sylvain Guintoli and MV Agusta Reparto Corse’s Leon Camier completed the top 10.

The opening Superpole session of the weekend saw the 11th to 20th place qualifiers fight it out for the right to enter Superpole 2. BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini and Camier each achieved their ambition.
