Qualifying produced some surprises, as race day gets underway at Budds Creek Raceway for round six of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Series in Mechanicsville, Maryland. A pouring rain this morning forced the organizers to limit practice to one session and cancel the qualifying race.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Christophe Pourcel was top qualifier in the 450 class, posting a time that was over a second faster than the next fastest qualifier AutoTrader.com/Toyota/JGR Yamaha’s Justin Barcia on track that was soft and deep in places. On the clock, Pourcel turned a 2:13.181, compared to Barcia’s 2:14.226.

Series points leader Ryan Dungey’s 2:14.371 put the Red Bull KTM rider into third place in qualifying, while Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jason Anderson was fourth-fastest with a 2:14.203. Meanwhile, RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy Johns Suzuki’s Ken Roczen rounded out the top five with a 2:15.435.

Sixth through 10th places in the 450 class were filled by RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy Johns Suzuki’s Broc Tickle (2:15.765); AutoTrader.com/Toyota/JGR Yamaha’s Phil Nicoletti (2:17.036); Honda’s Fredrik Noren (2:17.171); Yoshimura Suzuki’s Blake Baggett (2:17.228) and BTO KTM’s Justin Brayton (2:18.296).

The biggest news out of practice was that HRC Honda’s Cole Seely failed to qualify.

In the 250 class, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo was quickest with a 2:18.801. Second fastest was defending series champ Jeremy Martin on the Yamalube Star Racing Yamaha with a 2:19.373.

Rounding out the top five in the 250 class were GEICO Honda’s JR Hampshire (2:19.840); Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy (2:19.857) and Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin (2:19.865).
