Buchanan, Michigan (July 5, 2014) – Despite stiff competition from Team Muscle Milk Honda’s Trey Canard, Ken Roczen pulled away at the end of each of today’s motos to take the overall victory with an impressive 1-1 finish at the RedBud National in Buchanan, Michigan.
Canard led the first four laps of the opening moto before Roczen could get his Red Bull KTM around the Honda rider and into the lead. Canard stayed close to Roczen’s rear fender for the next few laps and even retook the lead at one point, however, Roczen finally took control of the race at the midway point of the race and pulled away to a 4.5-second gap over Canard at the finish.
Ryan Dungey ran second for the first part of the race, however, the Red Bull KTM rider dropped in behind Roczen and Canard on lap five and stayed there for the remainder of the race.
Canard jumped into the lead again in moto two, and led for five laps this time before Roczen finally went by. Canard gave Roczen a much tougher time in the second moto, pushing the KTM rider for the lead until late in the race where a tip-over on lap 11 dropped the Oklahoma rider back to fourth.
In the meantime, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac was making an impressive run through the pack and passed Dungey on lap seven to move into second.
At the end of the race, Roczen took the checkered flag with 10 seconds to spare over Tomac, with Dungey and Canard finishing third and fourth.
Behind Roczen, Tomac’s 4-2 was good enough for second overall, while Dungey was third overall with a 3-3.
Canard took fourth overall at 4-2, with BTO Sports’ Andrew Short rounding out the top five with a 5-5.
