Carmichael gets his first

Paul Carruthers | March 11, 2000

Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki’s Ricky Carmichael withstood the constant pressure of Chaparral Mazda Yamaha’s Jeremy McGrath to win the first AMA 250cc Supercross of his career today at Daytona International Speedway.

Carmichael’s pace was such that he lapped fifth-place finisher Mike LaRocco – who himself turned in a stellar ride after a first-lap crash left him dead last – only to let LaRocco back past on the final lap. A distant third went to Team Yamaha’s David Vuillemin, with Honda’s Sebastien Tortelli finishing fourth.

The day of firsts started earlier when teen sensation Travis Pastrana won the first AMA 125cc Supercross of his career, topping championship points leader Brock Sellards and Kawasaki’s Nicolas Wey.
