Kent Howerton Won the ABC Wide World of Sports Made-for-TV Race

In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to October of 1984 and the ABC Wide World of Sports Superbikers race at Carlsbad Raceway. This shot shows the three riders who battled for the win that year in the event that brought together racers from various disciplines of racing to compete against one another. With few exceptions, the made-for-TV race, which was extremely popular at the time, was dominated by motocross racers.
Such was the case in 1984, and here Broc Glover (3) is leading fellow MXers Ricky Johnson (17) and Kent Howerton (14). By the end of the race, it was Kawasaki-mounted Howerton working his way up to score the victory over Johnson and Glover.
It marked the second Superbikers victory for Howerton, who won the first edition of the race in 1979.
