Spain’s Josep Garcia had a flawless weekend at the GP of Portugal II, round five of the FIM EnduroGP World Championship in Fafe, June 19-21. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider won the Akrapovic Super Test on Friday and then took overall victories on both Saturday and Sunday, marking his second triple win of the season, after also achieving this at his home GP in Oliana, Spain.
American Rachel Gutish officially clinched the FIM Women’s Enduro World Championship for the second year in a row following Sunday’s racing.

The event was marked by high temperatures, dust and increasingly rough special tests. On Saturday, despite not quite finding his best feeling, Garcia controlled the race to take the overall win by eight seconds over his teammate, Andrea Verona, who edged out TM Moto’s Zach Pichon by two-tenths of a second.
Garcia had even more room to play with on Sunday, finishing 32 seconds ahead of Sherco’s Hamish MacDonald and Pichon. The day did not go as smoothly for Verona, who was fifth overall. He also finished third in the Enduro2 class, extending his podium streak—in class—to more than seven years.
“It’s been an incredible weekend,” Garcia said following Sunday’s racing. “With the level of competition in EnduroGP right now, it’s so difficult to put together a perfect weekend, so to do it again is something I’m really proud of. Yesterday was a good day, but today I felt even better on the bike. From the first test onwards, I felt comfortable, confident and able to ride the way I wanted to. We made some good changes to our lines and approach compared to yesterday, especially in the more technical sections, and that helped me manage the difficult conditions. The Cross Test was completely destroyed by the end of the day, so it was important to stay smart and avoid unnecessary risks. I’m really happy to take another overall win and continue my unbeaten run in Enduro1.”

With this double victory, Garcia now has seven wins this season and further extends his championship lead. With only two rounds remaining in France and Wales, he leads EnduroGP with 189 points, 34 ahead of Verona, and tops the E1 standings with 200 points, 43 ahead of Morgan Lesiardo (Triumph).
In Enduro2, Verona still leads Pichon by 13 points, 186-173. MacDonald is third on 152 points.
Beta’s Brad Freeman was the Enduro3 class winner on both days in Portugal and now leads the class championship, which has become an ultra-close battle. Just three points separate the top three racers. Freeman leads on 156 points, followed by Husqvarna’s Albinn Norrbin on 155 and Sherco’s Steve Holcombe on 154 points.
“Overall, I’m happy with the weekend,” Freeman said. “Taking another two Enduro3 wins is important for the championship, and the battle for the title is now incredibly tight.”
In the Women’s division, Rieju’s Gutish and Canadian Shelby Turner battled all weekend, with the Triumph rider, Turner, winning both days. Saturday’s win was her first in EnduroGP competition. However, Gutish clinched the class championship number one plate after Sunday’s race. Fellow Rieju rider Rosie Rowett of Great Britain is holding down second (41 points behind Gutish), just seven points ahead of Sherco’s Nieve Holmes of Great Britain. Turner, who did not compete in the first two rounds in Italy and Spain, is currently sixth in class.CN
