Let’s do this Detroit! Round 11 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross and SuperMotocross World Championship touches down in the Motor City inside Ford Field. Hunter Lawrence continues to lead the 450SX points chase coming into the night while Cole Davies extends his lead in the 250SX East championship. Follow along to see how things went down in Detroit.
After another exciting night of racing, fans saw both Ken Roczen and Cole Davies dominate their respective main events.

450SX MAIN EVENT
Just like that things are tighter than ever in the 450SX points chase. Ken Roczen started up front and passed for the lead on lap three as he overtook Jorge Prado. The Suzuki rider made it look easy as he nailed his laps but pressure continued to build as Chase Sexton and Hunter Lawrence closed in during their own battle. The moment of the race came when Lawrence cartwheeled through the whoops and effectively ended his night.

Roczen led the rest of the 24 laps and sealed the deal on his second win of the year. This is the first time in five years that Roczen has scored multiple wins in one season. He also makes up massive ground in the championship and sits just 14 points back from the points leader.

“This was a tough Main Event,” Roczen said. “I was definitely not the fastest in the beginning. I was playing a little bit with the track. I knew they were gaining on me, so I switched up my rhythms slightly. It was tough, because I wasn’t necessarily lighting the world on fire [with my speed] but the track was so tough. The whoops were a 50-50 chance you were going to make it through or end up on your back. I am so excited, you have no idea. We closed up some points, but we still have a lot of racing to go.”

Chase Sexton made his return to racing action in Detroit and finished on the podium in second. Sexton won his heat race earlier in the night and started up front in the main event. He benefitted twice when Webb and Prado tangled and later when Lawrence crashed through the whoops. This secured a podium position for Sexton in his first race back from injury.

“Those weeks at home watching the races, there were some dark times,” Sexton said. “Obviously, I didn’t want to get injured and didn’t want to sit on the couch, but I wanted to come back when I was ready. I felt pretty good tonight, but I also felt that couch about 10 minutes into the Main Event. I felt good in the beginning and got a little tight and a little winded. We’ll go back to work but definitely a great start to the comeback. It’s been a long year for the team and me, but we want to go up from here.”

Malcolm Stewart rounded out the podium for his best finish of the season. The Husqvarna rider started inside the top five and looked consistent in the early laps. He also bumped up a spot once Lawrence crashed, moving him from fourth to third. This is the back-to-back season bests for Stewart and his first podium of the year.

“It’s been tough,” Stewart said. “I had an unfortunate situation in Anaheim. I kind of just felt like I didn’t know if I’d get on the podium [this season]. That’s partly just not believing in yourself, and I realized I need to pull myself out of that. I want to give it up to my team, they’ve been in my ear all season telling me I can do this. I told them we’d pop some champagne before the end of the season, so huge shout out to them.”

Justin Cooper finished fourth with Eli Tomac rounding out the top five. Tomac showed no real urgency even with the gift of Lawrence going down. His fifth place finish still puts him back into the points lead as he carries the red plate by four going into St. Louis.

“Of course, I saw Hunter’s [Lawrence] crash and knew I was going to take advantage of that once I saw him a lap down, but overall, a bit of a frustrating day here,” Tomac said. “I’ve actually struggled here my past couple rides. I don’t know what it is. I haven’t had the best success at Detroit lately. Maybe I’ve been in kind of a midseason slump. We’ll do what we can to get better, improve, and get back to winning some races and be up at the front.”

Lawrence remounted after a scary crash but was forced to pit with a damaged front brake. He made a quick stop in the mechanics area but later fell again and finished a distant 18th. This is his worst result of the season and the first time since Glendale that Lawrence won’t have the red plate.

250SX MAIN EVENT
Cole Davies dominated the Detroit main event. The Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha rider rounded lap one way back in ninth place but slowly worked his way through the field. Davies used his exceptional whoop speed to make passes and found his way into a podium position with 10 minutes still left on the clock. After a short battle with Jo Shimoda, Davies made a great run through the whoops and passed the leader Seth Hammaker. Hammaker didn’t put up much of a fight and Davies easily won by more than 10 seconds. This marks Davies’ third win in a row as he extends his lead to nine over Hammaker.

Hammaker still held on for second. He started up front and led breifly after Nate Thrasher threw it away in the whoops. Hammaker sprinted at the front and opened up a lead of about five seconds over Shimoda and Davies but kept losing time to Davies in the whoop section. This is where the pass was eventually made and while Hammaker tried to catch a tow, he eventually lost the pace of Davies. Hammaker mentioned that he tried to play it smart and not throw the whole race away and another podium result keeps him less than 10 points back in the title fight.

“When I don’t perform, I’m pretty hard on myself,” Davies said. “But I’m stoked with that Main Event. I know that’s how I can ride. I just put everything together well. I didn’t have a good start, but I made it happen, so I’m stoked with that.”

Jo Shimoda rounded out the podium in third. The Honda HRC Progressive rider fought for a podium spot all night but slipped back to fourth after losing the position to Club MX’s Coty Schock. Schock looked to be a shoe-in for a spot on the box but crashed in the whoops with one minute left on the clock. This handed the position back to Shimoda who continues to run third in the championship standings.

“That was a tough race,” Hammaker said. “I got myself off to a pretty good start and was riding okay in the beginning. I knew Cole [Davies] was in the back of the pack but man, he was riding good. Gotta give it up to him. A solid second on the night. I’ve learned from the past not to throw the races away that aren’t there for me. I want to win more than anybody, but you’ve got to know when to pull back and second is what we had tonight.”
Coty Schock remounted after his crash and salvaged fourth at the line while Henry Miller rounded out the top five for the first time ever.

“Honestly, I was just so bad all day,” Shimoda said. “I just couldn’t figure it out. I just have to do better. Nothing was really good for me today, so I’m sorry to my team. We tested all week and I think we’re stepping in the right direction, so we’ve got to keep chasing.”

QUALIFYING
Hunter Lawrence is the fastest rider in the 450SX division here in Detroit. Things didn’t start out so smooth for the 450SX points leader though as he crashed in the first session to start the day. He fired back with a fast lap which put him on pole position for the rest of the night. Ken Roczen claimed second overall, just 0.06 off of Lawrence’s time. Roczen was fastest in the first session and is definitely a threat for the win tonight. Malcolm Stewart is fresh off his season-best finish a week ago and grabbed the third fastest time. Chase Sexton is back in action for fourth with Justin Cooper rounding out the top five. Eli Tomac found himself back in 10th, his worst qualifying position of the year.

250SX QUALIFYING
No surprises in the 250SX division as points leader Cole Davies grabbed the top spot in both of the 250 qualifying sessions. The New Zealander said he’s having fun and likes how technical the track is. His whoop speed was unbeatable yet again as he goes to the line first for the night show. Seth Hammaker was just a tenth off in second overall and was the only other 250 rider in the 51-second range. Club MX’s Devin Simonson clocked the third best time with third overall. This is Simonson’s best qualifying to date. Caden Dudney and Nate Thrasher rounded out the top five.
