The opening round of the FIM World Supercross Championship took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on November 8, to kick off the five-race 2025 season. Held at the Autodromo Oscar y Juan Galvez F1 track, Ken Roczen and Max Anstie used their veteran experience to sweep all three of their respective main events.

SX1
Roczen dominated all three main events. The former WSX World Champion battled a stomach bug during his international trip but saved his energy for when he needed it most. The Pipes Motorsports Suzuki rider topped the afternoon qualifying session and posted the fastest time in the following Superpole lap. From there, it was smooth sailing for the German native, as good starts put him up front from the get-go. Wins in both of the sprint races laid the foundation for another solid performance in the final main race of the night. With a clean sweep, Roczen heads into round two with the points lead in the SX1 division.
“I feel like I rode well,” Roczen said. “With the track and the moisture, there’s a fine line between pushing for speed and sliding out and making mistakes. I had fun out there. I thought the track was awesome, and I had an incredible night.”

Yamaha’s Justin Cooper finished second overall with 5-2-2 scores on the night. The American rider continued his extensive run of races this year by adding WSX to his calendar but remains a wild-card entry due to his participation in only two of the five rounds. Cooper looked comfortable up front all night. He stayed close to Roczen in the final two races of the night and finished in the runner-up spot to close out round one. He’s eight points behind Roczen in the points standings.
Haiden Deegan made his 450cc debut in Argentina and finished third overall after the three main events. The Star Racing Yamaha rider missed his gate selection in race one and had the last gate pick for all three races. He overcame the adversity and passed the most riders on track en route to 4-6-3 finishes. Deegan burned up two clutches in the first two races but kept things together in race three to earn his best result of the night. Deegan is another wild card for the series and only plans to race again at the Australian round on November 29.
“I’m still getting used to this bike, so I’m just learning and progressing every time I get out there,” Deegan said. “I’ve dreamed of racing against Ken since I was a little kid. I have photos of me in the grandstands, and I had his jersey in my room. So just being on the same track with these guys is a huge accomplishment for me, my team and my family.”
Christian Craig (Honda) and Jason Anderson (Suzuki) rounded out the top five, both making their racing debut on new teams.

SX2
The SX2 (250cc) division saw a similar outcome with Max Anstie sweeping the field in all three mains. The British veteran posted the fastest time in the Superpole lap and proceeded to go 1-1-1 on the night in an untouched outing to start the season. Anstie, who raced for the GSM Powered By Star Racing Yamaha team, is continuing to recover from a leg injury in the AMA series and looked strong. He beat out the defending WSX champ, Shane McElrath, and now starts the season on top with the red plate.
McElrath finished second on the night. He returned to the 250cc Honda in hopes of landing on the top step of the box. Unfortunately for him, he was no match for Anstie and only found his way as far up as second in race two. Third-place finishes in the other two mains held him back as he battled for a podium position. He’s eight points back from Anstie in the series standings.
“It was a lot of work tonight, a lot harder than it should have been,” McElrath said. “We came in prepared, but we still have work to do. It was some hard racing tonight. The track was technical. There weren’t a lot of lines, and they were slippery.”
Coty Schock rounded out the podium in third overall. The Rick Ware Racing rider looked comfortable fighting for a spot on the box against some of the more established former race winners. Schock’s 5-5-2 scores showed improvement throughout the night and saw him end the round with his best finish yet.
The World Supercross Championship continues to round two next weekend, November 15, in Vancouver, Canada. CN
