Bubba Shobert Scored Victory with a Last-Second Pass

In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we wind back the clock 41 years to the start of 1984’s San Jose Mile II. Ricky Graham (No. 3) charges ahead, leading Scotty Parker (No. 11), Bubba Shobert (behind Parker), Steve Eklund (No. 8) and others in a thrilling opening lap at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. The mid-September race would go down as one of the wildest in AMA Grand National history. Coming off the final bend, it was a three-rider duel with Hank Scott (No. 14) appearing to have the edge midway through the corner. But then Shobert got the drive and Graham followed him across the line for second. “I guess that was about the wildest mile I’ve ever been in,” said Shobert after the race.
