Vance & Hines Yamaha’s Thomas Stevens Scored the Victory
In this week’s Throwback, we dial back the clock 33 years to August of 1991 and land at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. That weekend Mid-Ohio was hosting round five of the AMA Superbike Championship. This Mike Stuhler photo shows the start of the 25-lap Superbike main event with a talent-packed field. It’s a fairly even launch between Thomas Stevens (No. 11), Freddie Spencer (No. 19), Miguel Duhamel (No. 97) and pole winner Jamie James (No. 2). Also shown in the shot are top riders like Rueben McMurter (No. 24), Dale Quarterley (No. 32), Jacques Guenette, Jr. (No. 39), Tom Kipp (No. 16), Steve Crevier (No. 91), Larry Schwarzbach (No. 64) and Scott Russell (No. 22). Stevens chased down early leader Kipp and then held off challenges by Duhamel and Russell to score his first AMA Superbike win. Stevens went on to win the championship that year.
