Hamel made Heroic Charge in the Final Stages to Steal the Victory
In this week’s Throwback we wind back the time machine 32 years to September of 1992 and land somewhere in the desert outside of Las Vegas. The photo shows Danny Hamel (left) and teammate Paul Ostbo all smiles after winning the Las Vegas 300, the fourth round of the Best in the Desert Championship Series. With 11 miles to go the Hamel/Ostbo pairing were running second (17-seconds behind) to the Ty Davis/Larry Roeseler team. In the closing stages Hamel took over the team’s Kawasaki KX500 and made a dramatic charge to catch and pass Roeseler to secure the victory. After the race Ostbo joked that he credited his team’s win to careful planning. “You get a real young partner – the best partner in the world, you give him the bike and he wins it for you. That’s all it takes.”
