Frenchman David Vuillemin Holds Early Lead Over Ricky Carmichael and Guy Cooper
In this week’s Throwback we turn back the clock 21 years to the Glen Helen AMA Motocross National in 2002. This photo shows the start of one of the premier class (250cc) motos and it’s Yamaha’s David Vuillemin (No. 12) out to the early lead. Right next to him is Ricky Carmichael (No. 4) on the factory Honda. Also blasting up from the outside is Guy Cooper on the four-stroke KTM 520SX, which was punched out to 540cc and reportedly made 70 horsepower in a 230 pound package. You can also see John Dowd (No. 16), Keith Johnson (No. 38), Sean Hamblin (No. 99) and Sebastien Tortelli (No. 13) in the lead group. Carmichael went on to win the national with a 1-1. Tortelli was runner up and Tim Ferry third.
