In the days when Yamaha’s 400cc four-stroke was unique among field of buzzing two-strokes
In this week’s Throwback we take the Wayback Machine to August 16, 1998, and head to the northlands of Minnesota, and Spring Creek Motocross Park. Here we see Doug Henry (No. 19) leading a talent-filled group of national MX stars into the first turn in round 10 of the AMA/Mazda Truck National Championship Motocross Series. Under ideal racing conditions, Henry launched his Pete Steinbrecher-tuned YZ400F off the line and into the lead at the start of the second 250cc moto. Big four-stroke thumpers were still experimental at this point, so the field was made up primarily of two-stroke 250cc bikes. Others getting good starts in this moto included Ezra Lusk (No. 3), defending series champ Jeff Emig (No. 1), Larry Ward (No. 4) and Mike Katin, Jr. (No. 56). You can also see Mickael Pichon (No. 16), Jimmy LaMastus (No. 75), Cory Keeney (No. 96), Brian Mason (No. 797) and Richard Taylor (No. 71). Emig scored a 1-1 to take the overall victory.
