Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019

Steve Cox | May 16, 2019

Supercross is over, and now it’s time to head outdoors for the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. It all gets going this weekend, May 19, at Prairie City OHV Park in Rancho California, CA. You might know this race simply as The Hangtown Motocross Classic. This is the longest-running motocross national of all. 2019 marks the 51st running of the “Classic.”

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019 – Can Tomac Do It Again?

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019
Heading into the 2019 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, Eli Tomac has to be considered the odds-on favorite to win the 2019 450MX title. He is the two-time defending champ.

The “outdoors” series get started in earnest with three straight weekends of racing before its first break. Unlike supercross and its 16 races, breaks are scattered throughout the 12-round outdoor series. After all, motocross racing consists of two motos per race, each 30-minutes-plus-two-laps in length, and are held during the day (without a roof), and in all kinds of weather conditions, which can include three-digit temperatures with high humidity. Motocross racing is not for whips, but even motocrossers need time to rest, and in some cases heal up, every now and then.

The start of the outdoor nationals gives many racers and teams a fresh start. Some riders bailed out of the supercross series early to let injuries heal so they can get a second chance in the outdoors. For others, it’s already the end of their racing season now that some teams these day–mostly privately funded teams–and racers–mostly privateers–only focus on supercross and watch from the sidelines during the summer months. Most of the factory “superstars” of the sport (from KTM, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Husqvarna), however, forge on and take aim at 250MX’s Gary Jones Cup and 450MX’s Edison Dye Cup and their number-one plates. The opposite can be said, too, as some racers are what you would call motocross specialists, and they wait all winter/spring for the outdoor season to begin.

To get caught up with who’s in and who’s out for the upcoming nationals, below we’ve compiled a list of teams and their plans for the summer months. Before we get to that, however, there are a few other things worth mentioning first.

Beyond the professional action this summer is expansions to American motocross’ amateur segment of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. After a popular and successful debut last season, the 125 All-Star Series will expand to include all 12 rounds of the championship in 2019, serving as a complement to the pros each and every Saturday this summer. Former stars like Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Sipes, Wil Hahn, and more joined the fray of 125cc battles last season, and there’s no doubt this celebration of two-strokes will continue to grow with a full slate of races.

Additionally, the Amateur Racing Program at the Nationals will be bigger and better than ever. Amateur racers from all over the country will have an opportunity to race on the same track as their pro counterparts at all 12 rounds on the schedule, meaning last year’s total of nearly 10,000 participants will likely be surpassed, further strengthening the sport’s vital amateur racing scene.

TEAM BREAKDOWN

450MX

Team Honda

Team Honda is ready to go for Hangtown, with both Cole Seely and two-time 450cc National Champ Ken Roczen set to line up on Saturday. The big question is about Roczen’s illness that he’s been battling for the past couple of months. If he doesn’t have a handle on that yet, the summer could be much longer than he’d like it to be.

94        Ken Roczen

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna

Dean Wilson is still recovering from the shoulder injury incurred at the Denver Supercross, and it’s taking it’s time to heal, so he’ll miss round one and maybe more, but should be back well within the first half of the series. That said, former 250cc National Champ Zach Osborne is making his 450cc MX debut at Hangtown, and 2018 450cc SX champ Jason Anderson is due to be back in action as well.

Fresh Start For Tomac

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019
Eli Tomac

Monster Energy Kawasaki

Joey Savatgy is still nursing the leg injury he suffered at Las Vegas and a shoulder injury that happened at Nashville, so he’s trying to heal up before he sets off on his first 450cc MX series. At the earliest, he’ll be back on the starting line by round three, but it could be longer than that. That said, Eli Tomac is the two-time defending champ of the series, and he was on fire at the end of the SX championship, so he’s the clear favorite to “threepeat.”

Will Cooper Webb Surpise Us Again?

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019
Probably the main question going into the outdoor season is will Cooper Webb shine like he did in supercross?

Red Bull KTM

Former 250cc National Champ Cooper Webb is making his KTM MX debut at Hangtown this weekend after winning his first-ever 450cc SX title, so he’s riding high on that confidence. Still, it’s a new series, with new elements, so nothing is guaranteed. His teammate Marvin Musquin has won quite a few 450cc Nationals the last few years, and both racers plan on contending for the title.

2          Cooper Webb

25        Marvin Musquin

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM

Benny Bloss has missed all of 2019 so far recovering from knee surgery, but he should be returning to action in about a month. His teammate, however, former 250cc National Champ Blake Baggett—who has led the 450cc MX title chase during the last couple years, giving Eli Tomac fits—is ready to go, as is former 450cc MX National winner Justin Bogle.

29        Benny Bloss (Out Temporarily)

JGR/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing

Weston Peick just had another surgery on his face, fixing his nose and putting a new plate behind one of his eyes, as he recovers from a horrific bunch of injuries he suffered at the Paris Supercross last fall. He had been riding, but he’s not going to be racing until he can really race, which likely won’t be in 2019. Justin Hill is JGR’s only 450cc racer at the moment. The team’s Chad Reed is one of the few big names of the sport who chooses not to follow the outdoor nationals. Some veteran racers such as Reed feel that skipping motocross will extend their racing careers.

Can Justin Barcia Stay Healthy?

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019
Justin Barcia has proven to have the speed to win but can he stay healthy for the entire season?

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing

Dean Ferris was filling in for Romain Febvre in the GPs. Febvre should be returning to action in the GPs this weekend in Portugal, and Ferris is coming to the USA to fill in for Aaron Plessinger, whose broken heel (suffered in Daytona) is not healing very fast. Ferris is actually the reigning Australian 450cc National Motocross Champion, and he did so twice in a row racing Yamahas. However, he announced last year that he’d be leaving the team to race in the U.S. before he had a deal in the U.S., so at the start of the Aussie MX National season, he was filling in for Febvre in the GPs. He returned to his series in Australia for one doubleheader weekend a couple weeks ago, on a KTM, and won, and now he’s headed to the U.S. Justin Barcia should be much healthier at this point and should be on the line and ready to rip at Hangtown as well. Barcia, who won the opening supercross round this year, has struggled with injuries ever since. He pulled out of SX early to get ready for the outdoors.

250MX

Geico Honda

Two-time former 250cc National Champ Jeremy Martin is still out as his back heals from last year, but the Geico team has a full four-racer rig at Hangtown, with newly crowned 250SX East champ Chase Sexton, RJ Hampshire, Christian Craig (who missed most of SX with a thumb injury), and former MX2 GP contender Hunter Lawrence. Lawrence could be one to look out for, especially at Hangtown, since chances are it’s going to be a mud race—if forecasters get this one correctly. (The AFT Sacramento Mile, which is held just up the road from Hangtown on the same weekend, has already been canceled because of the threat of rain.) Cameron Mcadoo, who was a fill-in for supercross, with Craig and Martin on the sidelines, is not competing in the outdoors unless he has made arrangements with a private effort that we don’t know about.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna

Michael Mosiman and Jordan Bailey are both looking to improve their results this year in the MX series, but most of the anticipation for the Husky team former MX2 GP championship contender Thomas Covington. Covington struggled badly in supercross, which has never been his forte, but he can ride outdoors, and spending a half-decade in the GPs should have him well-prepared for a possible mudder at Hangtown, as well.

Is Cianciarulo The Favorite To Win The 250MX Title?

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019
Adam Cianciarulo is a favorite to win the 250MX title.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki

Austin Forkner is likely out for the summer after surgery to repair his ACL in his knee, but the rest of the team is ready to go. Adam Cianciarulo should be a title contender.

TLD/Red Bull KTM

Sean Cantrell recently found out he fractured a bone in his wrist and is taking a few weeks off to let it heal, but the team is adding a rookie, Derek Drake, to the lineup for the summer (and beyond). Drake joins Jordon Smith, Mitchell Falk and Shane McElrath, although McElrath is not a guarantee for round one.

Enzo Lopes recently discovered he has a fractured scaphoid in his wrist and will be off for a few weeks while he heals, and Jimmy Decotis had a supercross-only deal with the JGR team. Still, Alex Martin is a proven outdoor title contender, so he should be in the mix, as should Kyle Peters.

Or Will Ferrandis Take It?

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Preview 2019
Dylan Ferrandis just won the 250SX West title, but he’s very fast outdoors, too. He’s a good all-around rider who could win the 250MX class at Hangtown, especially if it’s wet.

Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha

This team has won four of the last five 250cc National MX titles, with Jeremy Martin winning the title in 2014 and 2015, then Cooper Webb winning it in 2016, and Aaron Plessinger winning it in 2018. Three of their four racers will be ready to go at Hangtown, and again, with it being a potential mudder, look for Dylan Ferrandis to be strong. Mitchell Oldenburg will be missing at least round one, and maybe one or two more races, as he recovers from severe, third-degree burns on his butt cheek from one of his crashes in Las Vegas. He’s currently in the hospital for at least another five days while his skin grafts heal.

32        Justin Cooper

34        Dylan Ferrandis

39        Colt Nichols

66        Mitchell Oldenburg (Out Temporarily)

CycleTrader/Rock River Yamaha

The big news for the Rock River team is the addition of 2017 Japanese IA2 (250cc) National MX Champion Yusuki Watanabe, who will be making his debut with the team at Hangtown. The team will also be fielding Brandon Hartranft and Jacob Hayes as they did throughout supercross.
