In this week’s Throwback we go back 30 years to the 1989 Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. It was the second round of the 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship and the three Aussie GP regulars are caught in this Paul Carruthers images doing battle in front of their home crowd. The shot shows Wayne Gardner on his Rothmans Honda NSR500 leading countrymen Keven Magee on the No. 5 Team Lucky Strike Roberts Yamaha YZR500 and Gardner’s Honda teammate Mick Doohan, who was a GP rookie that season. Gardner went on to win the race, much to the delight of the crowd in a close one over American Wayne Rainey. Magee finished fourth and Doohan eighth.
