Throwback Thursday: Billy Labrie and Randy Goss Both Winners at Ascot Park
In this week’s Throwback we dial it back 38 years to October of 1980 and the AMA Grand National Championship season finale held in front of a sellout crowd at Ascot Park in Gardena, California. Billy Labrie rode a strong race, taking the lead on lap 15 when early leader Scott Pearson crashed. Labrie held on to take victory, in spite of his tires being seriously worn by the end. It marked the Floridian’s third national win that year. In the photo Labrie is reaching across to congratulate Randy Goss. Goss finished fifth that night, but that was good enough to hold off Hank Scott by a single point to win the 1980 AMA Grand National Championship. Scott (on the left being interviewed) did all he could, but could only muster third. On the right is Ascot runner up Steve Eklund.
