With a lead of 35 points over Miguel Oliveira, SKY VR46 Kalex rider Pecco Bagnaia needs to gain another 15 over the Red Bull KTM rider to secure the Moto2 title in Australia.

But this is a circuit where the KTM’s better performance in long corners pays dividends, and Oliveira won here last year.

Sure enough, a Red Bull KTM did top today’s time sheets. But it was the wrong one: Brad Binder edging less than a tenth ahead of morning leader Marcel Schrotter (Dynavolt Kalex); with veteran Italtrans Kalex rider Mattia Pasini third-fastest, also on a morning time.

Iker Lecuona (SII KTM) was fourth, before a heavy crash cut his afternoon run short; with Bagnaia and Oliveira fifth- and sixth-fastest, split by two hundredths, and less than three tenths off provisional pole.

Alex Marquez, Fernandez, Vierge and Locatelli rounded out the top ten. Bagnaia’s often-helpful team-mate Luca Marini was down in 22bd, with arm-pump issues.

Moto3

Canet, Moto3, Australian MotoGP 2018 (Gold & Goose photo)

All Moto3’s fast times came in the afternoon session, with EG Honda’s Aron Canet ousting Del Conca Honda’s Jorge Martin from the top by just over a tenth of a second.

Martin’s rival for the title Marco Bezzecchi (Redox KTM) was a close fourth-fastest behind Marcos Ramirez’s Bester Capital KTM.

After crashing at last weekend’s Japanese GP, Martin’s points advantage over the Italian is just one point.

With Gabriel Rodrigo (RBA KTM) and Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Leopard Honda) fifth and sixth, the rider in third overall – Del Conca Honda’s Fabio Di Giannantonio – was down in 23rd, after his session was cut short by a heavy crash.
