In this week’s Throwback we go back 23 years to 1994 and the WERA/Sunoco/Performance Machine National Endurance Series at Putnam Park Road Course in Indiana. The WERA National Endurance Series was training ground for many of America’s top road racers of the era from Kevin Schwantz, to Scott Russell, Jamie James and many more.
It was a very good day for Team Suzuki Endurance on this July day at Putnam Park. Team Suzuki fielded two teams, both racing Suzuki GSX-R1100s, and they finished first and second. The interesting thing was the veteran No. 1 team of Michael and Tray Batey, both in their mid-30s at the time, beat Team Suzuki’s B squad of young guns David Stanton and Steve Patterson, who were both in their early 20s.
Finishing third that day was Virginia Breeze Racing’s Glen Szarek and Jeff Atwell on the team’s Yamaha FZR1000.
