In this week’s Throwback we go back to Y2K. Remember that? At the start of the year 2000 everything computer-connected was feared might stop working because programs wouldn’t be able to deal with a two-digit code for the year going from 99 to 00. Ultimately, we and our computers survived and racing was better than ever in the AMA EA Sports Supercross Series at Daytona International Speedway that March.
It was a great showdown season in Supercross between King of Supercross Jeremy McGrath and up-and-coming Ricky Carmichael. In the Daytona Supercross that year RC would outduel MC, but in the end McGrath would win the SX title.
This Heat race photo shows McGrath leading the way on his No. 1 Mazda/Chaparral Yamaha. He’s being pursued by American Honda’s Sebastien Tortelli (No. 21), Heath Voss (No. 33), Greg Schnell (No. 63), Richard Taylor (No. 117) and Kevin Crine (No. 58). McGrath won the heat over Tortelli and Damon Huffman. In the main it was Carmichael over McGrath and David Vuillemin.
