TOOELE, UTAH, JUNE 28—Once again the battle for top honors in the MotoAmerica Superbike class was fought between the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha teammates, with Josh Hayes besting Cameron Beaubier to take his 54th career Superbike victory at Miller Motorsports Park.
Before the race start, Hayes said that his plan was to repeat JD Beach’s performance in yesterday’s Supersport race—get up front, check out and take the win. Unfortunately for Hayes, his young teammate had other plans and chased him down. The pair battled for most of the race, exchanging the lead and eyeing each other for weaknesses to prepare for that final run to the finish line.
Hayes made his move on the last lap and passed Beaubier; the Northern Californian was unable to answer back and had to settle for second. Beaubier now sits just one point ahead of his veteran teammate in the title chase.
Meanwhile in third, Yoshimura Suzuki’s Roger Hayden was able to hold off his young teammate—Jake Lewis—to take that final spot on the podium. Rounding out the top five in Superbikes was HMC KTM’s Chris Fillmore who came out on top in his usual battle with TTR Honda’s Danny Eslick.
Finishing fifth overall and topping the Superstock 1000 class was Yamalube/Westby Racing’s Josh Day. Joining Day on the podium was TOBC Racing Yamaha’s Taylor Knapp and HSBK Racing Aprilia’s Sheridan Morais. The pair were locked in their own battle for eighth overall.
In fourth was GN Gonzales Racing’s Shane Narbonne and rounding out the top five in Superstock was Ryder Alley Racing’s Mark Heckles.
As for Superstock 1000 points leader—RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne—his win or not finish streak continued as Gagne fell victim to a technical issue while battling with Day for the win in the Superstock class.
