Supercross: Ryan Dungey Kicks Off Anaheim 3 As Fastest Qualifier

Kit Palmer | January 31, 2015

Ryan Dungey established himself as the rider to beat tonight in round five of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Dungey, who retained the red-plate—signifying the class points leader—after last week’s Oakland round, topped both timed qualifiers. His 57.130 aboard his Red Bull KTM 450 SX topped all his rivals in the second and final session.

GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac was second fastest but just 0.080 seconds behind Dungey.

Honda’s Trey Canard was the final rider in the 57-second bracket. Canard, last week’s winner, posted a time of 57.487, nipping his teammate Cole Seely by 0.817 seconds.

RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy Johns/Suzuki Factory Racing team’s Ken Roczen looks back up to speed after his hard get-off last week at Oakland. He’s the fifth quickest with a best lap of 58.305, which is just 0.001 second behind Seely.

Justin Barcia had a rough ride in the second qualifying session. He was unable to recover from this mistake and took a nasty tumble.

Barcia was rattled in the fall and was slow to get back on his bike. He did, however, seem to shake it off and finished out riding the session, though he never got back up to his earlier speed.

Tyler Bowers was the fastest qualifier in the 250 class. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki Team rider was one of four riders to crack the 58-second mark.

GEICO Honda’s Malcolm Stewart is riding a wave of momentum coming into Anaheim 3 after capturing his first career Supercross win in the 250 class last week at Oakland. Stewart is second fastest, a half second off Bowers’ pace.

Justin Hill

Red Bull KTM’s Justin Hill is third quickest in the 250s.

West 250 SX points leader Cooper Webb is the last rider in the 58s with a 58.831 and is fourth quickest after qualifying.

Zach Osborne

Rockstar Energy Racing Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne is fifth quickest in 250 qualifying, finishing just ahead of Aaron Plessinger, Jessy Nelson, Josh Hansen, Zach Bell and Alex Martin. Weather conditions couldn’t be much better for racing tonight on a track that features a unique downhill start. Riders drop roughly five feet right out of the gate before reaching flat ground.
