SAN DIEGO, CA (September 17, 2014) – The AMA Supermoto Championship returned to downtown Sturgis last weekend for the second annual Sturgis Supermoto race. The City of Sturgis and its local businesses welcomed the racers with open arms in what has become the series’ premier event of the year – a race that drew 75 riders from around the country to battle for top honors in front of a healthy crowd of 7,000 people on Main Street in Downtown Sturgis.
Taking those top honors was former Daytona 200 winner, Intents Racing’s Joey Pascarella who had a near perfect weekend – taking the win in the Lites Pro main, Open Pro main and the Pro Lites Dash for Cash. Pascarella was leading the Open Pro Dash for Cash, but unfortunately a bike problem forced a DNF and stopped him short of a clean sweep of the weekend’s race.
“This weekend was pretty much perfect for me,” Pascarella said. “It was my first time in Sturgis so I didn’t know what to expect. But the track and city was awesome and I can’t wait to go back.”
Pascarella may have won the battle, but his teammate Gage McAllister won the war. McAllister’s dominant performance this season – only losing to Pascarella at round one – meant that the second-place finish was enough to secure the AMA Supermoto Open Pro Championship.
“I’m pumped to clinch the championship one round early and before going overseas to race,” said McAllister.
Rounding out the podium was two-time 125 AMA Motocross Champ and AMA Supermoto Unlimited Champion Micky Dymond on the Legends of the Road/Kemp Racing KTM.
In fourth was privateer Cory Gabbert on a KTM ahead of M&G Homes Kawasaki rider Monte Frank. Frank didn’t have weekend he planned but looks forward to a better performance in Italy next month while representing the U.S. at the Supermoto of Nations. Joining Frank is the newly crowned AMA Supermoto Champion McAllister and AMA Pro Flat Track/ Supermoto racer Johnny Lewis as America’s first-ever team to compete in the event.
PJ’s Motorcycle’s Sean Butterman showed a lot of enthusiasm on race day, with a last-to-second-place effort in the heat race and a holeshot in the main event before a crashing out of the lead in the first dirt section. Butterman was able to rebound to finish sixth. In seventh was Jake Thompson, followed by Brad Hendry and Eric Stump. And rounding out the top 10 was Travin Wiley.
