Lampkin’s Streak is Ended

| May 19, 2001

Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa-HRC RTL 250) has won the first day of the Belgian Trial, the third scoring round of the World Championship, contested today. The Japanese rider’s victory has broken the winning streak of Dougie Lampkin (Montesa-HRC Cota 315R), who prevailed on both days of each of the two previous meetings and continues to be a dominant force in the points standings, in which Fujinami has risen to second place. Both Amós Bilbao and David Cobos (both Montesa-HRC Cota 315R riders) were in the points zone, Cobos keeping fifth position in the standings. José Manuel Alcaraz suffered a fall that obliged him to abandon the competition, which has also placed doubt on his ability to compete in the second day of this round tomorrow.

Fujinami’s victory was based on consistency, as he was the best on both loops through the collection varying zones (some dry and quite artificial zones – with large rocks placed by the organizers).

“I am very happy with this first victory of the season,” Fujinami said in a Montesa press release. “I didn’t expect to win here in Belgium because until now this trial hasn’t been going well for me. It pleases me to be the first to beat Lampkin in the ‘outdoor’ world championship, and I’m convinced that this win will encourage me to acheive more…Don’t forget that my objective is to be the World Champion! I hope I’ll repeat this victory tomorrow.”

Lampkin, on the other hand, held fourth position at the end of the first round, only four points behind his teammate, but he didn’t do so well in the second round, and he also added one point to his account for excess time in completing the course.
