MC Shared the Podium with Ezra Lusk and Robbie Reynard at the Silverdome

In this week’s Throwback we dial it back to 1999’s AMA Supercross season, which was defined by one name: Jeremy McGrath. On April 10 of that year before a record-breaking crowd of 62,698 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome, “The King” (center) continued his relentless march toward a sixth title. Despite a technical, rutted track that McGrath admitted was “treacherous,” his consistency on the Mazda/Chaparral/Yamaha YZ250 proved unmatched.
To his left stands runner-up Ezra Lusk. While Lusk put in a valiant charge for Factory Honda, moving past Robbie Reynard on lap 13, he was unable to reel in the leader. To the right is Suzuki’s Robbie Reynard, who secured his first podium of the season. Reynard was the only rider capable of matching McGrath’s blistering pace early on, nearly sticking a wheel on the champion before a severe bout of arm pump forced him to settle for third.
As the Supercross series visits Ford Field in Detroit this weekend, the ghost of the Silverdome still looms large. While the venue has shifted to the heart of downtown, the Detroit area remains a cornerstone of the schedule. This 1999 podium—marking McGrath’s 59th career victory—serves as a reminder of the era when “The King” all but mathematically sealed his sixth title on Michigan soil.
