Yamaha vs Honda Was a Fierce Factory Rivalry in the Mid-1980s

In this week’s Throwback we go back 40 years to 1985 and the San Diego Supercross, the opening round of that year’s AMA/Miller High Life Supercross Series. Jack Murphy Stadium hosted 36,000 fans and they got to see some great battles that evening including this matchup between Yamaha’s Keith Bowen (14) and Honda’s Ron Lechien (6). Yamaha and Honda’s rivalry was red hot during this period and Lechien appeared to be cutting Bowen no slack with Bowen forced wide as the duo sped through a turn. In the two-moto format it was Bowen coming out ahead in this battle earning fourth overall (3-4). Lechien suffered a crash in the first moto, but recovered to finish 7th in the second moto to finish 12th overall.
