Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, October 4-5, once again hosted its iconic Race of Champions, presented by Kawasaki, marking the 49th consecutive year of this storied motocross tradition. While many events have come and gone, the Race of Champions has remained a staple of Northeast motocross, bringing together racers, fans and families for nearly five decades.

The 2025 edition was made possible by the unwavering support of Kawasaki and its local dealers, who have stood behind the event for over 40 years. Their dedication since the event’s early days has helped elevate the Race of Champions into one of the premier motocross weekends on the calendar. Local Kawasaki dealers, including Motorcycle Mall of Monmouth, Montgomeryville Cycle Center, Toms River Marine & Motorsports, and Crossroad Powersports, contributed to the weekend’s excitement with various motorcycle giveaways during Sunday’s festivities.

This year’s Race of Champions attracted an impressive turnout, with more than 1000 racers from 14 states making their way to Englishtown to compete across a wide range of classes. From up-and-coming amateurs to seasoned veterans, the field was stacked with talent ready to put on a show. The amateur portion took place on Friday and Saturday, October 3-4. The big winners during the amateur portion included Liam DeLowery, who delivered impressive performances, Trinnytie Batchelor, Barry Carsten, Wayne Powers Jr, Brian Ruggiero and Jorge Castillo, each with double-class overall wins. Additionally, Hudson Vagele and Maverick Manzer each achieved triple-class overall wins, while Forrest McPherson secured four class overall wins.

Sunday’s spotlight turned to the Pro Expert classes (250 and Open) and special intermission races for amateur and minibike riders.

William Canaguier at 2025 Race of Champions
William Canaguier was the top 250 A rider.

The Open A class took to the track first with a full gate of Expert and Pro riders. Bryce Shelly grabbed an early lead and tried to open a lead, but the pack of top contenders, including Bryton Carroll and William Canaguier, kept him honest. With a challenging track and warm temperatures, each rider had to be on their game. Just past halfway, Carroll made his move and got around Shelly to grab the lead and eventually take the win. Shelly was second, and Canaguier rounded out the podium. Canaguier got the jump on the field in the second motos and set off to try to go for the win. Carroll kept him close by and made a run several times at the Kawasaki rider. With the track getting rougher by the lap, mistakes and close calls forced the gap to close up and then back off again. Canaguier would go on to take the moto win, followed by Carroll and Shelly. After a couple of charges, Carroll couldn’t make the pass and had to settle for second in the moto behind Canaguier, with Shelly rounding out the top three. Carroll’s 1-2 moto scores gave him the overall win, followed by Canaguier (3-1) and Shelly (2-3).

In the 250 A class, Ricci Randanella got a jump on the field with Canaguier, Justin Rodbell, Grant Getz and Cory Carsten in tow. After getting a poor start, Carroll was working through the pack to try to catch the leaders. Close action at the front saw several riders take a shot at the lead. Just past halfway, it was still Randanella out front, with Canaguier in second and Carroll up to third. Carroll’s charge would bring him to the back wheel of Canaguier and eventually lead to him taking the moto win. Canaguier was second, and Jonathan Getz rounded out the top three.

The unseasonably warm temperatures were taking a toll on the riders. The busy Race of Champions schedule didn’t allow for much time between motos for riders competing in both classes. As a result, several riders didn’t line up for the second-moto gate drop. Two of the top five from moto one didn’t take the gate drop. That would allow for mixed-up overall. Canaguier, on a Kawasaki 250 borrowed from his Hunter Racing teammate Trinnity Batchelor, would get out to an early lead and take the win. He was followed across the line in the second moto by Justin Rodbell in second and Cory Carsten in third. With 2-1 moto scores, Canaguier won the overall. Justin Rodbell’s 4-2 scores gave him second, and a consistent 6-4 afternoon earned Brayden Ehlermann third overall.

Bryton Carroll at 2025 Race of Champions
Bryton Carroll won the Open A class.

As the top finishing pro rider in the combined 250 and Open classes, Canaguier took home an extra $1000 from the track on top of the regular purse.

Between the Pro motos, the crowd was treated to a series of special intermission races, which have long been a part of the Race of Champions weekend. In 2025, the prestigious Ironman Classic, sponsored by Motorcycle Mall of Monmouth, went to Trinnity Batchelor. Other highlights included repeat winner Forrest McPherson in the 65cc Kessler Cup, sponsored by Montgomeryville Cycle Center, Jayson LaBouef in the 85cc Top Gun Mini Cycle Shootout, sponsored by Crossroad Powersports, Chase Gleason in the Fast 50s and Hudson Vagele in the 125cc All-Stars moto.

With another successful year in the books, anticipation is already building for the milestone 50th annual Race of Champions in 2026, a celebration that promises to be bigger and better than ever.CN
