Schultz Topped Barry Kogut to Win the NHRA Pro Stock Nationals in Indianapolis

In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to 1987 and the NHRA U.S. Nationals held at Indianapolis Raceway Park in September of that year. This photo shows the final round of the Pro Stock Nationals that year with Dave Schultz (No. 6) and Barry Kogut (No. 9) facing off. Schultz had been consistently fastest all weekend on his Kawasaki Ninja-based machine and Kogut, racing a Vance & Hines Suzuki, figured his only shot to win in the final was to get off the line faster. It was a risky strategy and did not work out for Kogut as he left the line too early and red lighted automatically giving the victory to Schultz.
