Already Popular in Club Racing, A Few Nationals Included Superbikes in the Mid-1970s

In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to July of 1974 and the AMA Road Race National at Laguna Seca Raceway. This excellent Mush Emmons photo captured Kawasaki mounted Steve McLaughlin (83) and Yvon DuHamel (17) battling for the lead in what was then called the Open Production class. DuHamel went on to win on his Yoshimura-built machine and road racing fans couldn’t get enough of the street bike-based class and a couple of years later Superbikes became a national road racing series.
